New Moon in Virgo, August 25, 2014, 10:13 am EDT

At NEW MOON, a new cycle begins and sets the tone for the lunar month. Virgo is the sign of healing, mental discernment and practical action. When the Sun and Moon are in Virgo – it’s an opportune time to take steps to improve our health – mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Cleaning up our diet is a good first step – reducing (not cutting out completely) our intakes of excess sugar, salt and fat will help generate more physical energy and mental clarity.

Mercury, Planet of communication is the ruler of Virgo. Virgo’s strength is expressed by creating order out of chaos – for example – setting up new information systems, cleaning out cupboards, shelves, closets. It’s important to set priorities on how to use our time. Sometimes we can get caught up in taking care of details and neglect more important or urgent matters. Keeping a broader perspective is important – and helps us stay in balance.

New Moons occurs when the Sun and Moon are at the same degree in the same Sign. This Sun/Moon combination in Virgo is occurring opposite Neptune which is traveling through Pisces. Neptune is the Planet of visioning, dreaming, idealizing – and on a practical level – can bring illusion and delusion into a situation. This opposition can bring confusion – about what we perceive (or miss-perceive) about what is happening with our partners, families, communities and the world.

What steps can we take to stay grounded? This is where self-care comes in. By monitoring our energy, getting enough rest, eating simply and taking time to be present to ourselves and remembering to breath – we can relax our over-active mental activity and ground our energy. Mercury rules the lungs – and reminds us that we need plenty of oxygen to support our mental, physical and emotional needs. When I’ve taken the time to stop and observe my breathing, I’ve noticed that when I’ve been too distracted, I’ve had a pattern of holding my breath. Noticing this and breathing more consciously – I’ve generated much more energy.

Meanwhile Saturn and Mars are at the same degree of Scorpio and will start separating on Wednesday. This energy began to build a week ago. These effects will dissipate by the end of this month. This conjuction can be very frustrating – we can feel like we’re moving through glue! Saturn says stop and have patience. Mars wants to take action and has very little patience. Mars also brings courage and the ability to take initiative. Saturn brings wisdom and a sense of responsibility. Acting consciously – using the best of both planetary energies – can be very productive for moving plans and projects forward.

At the same time – with both Planets in Scorpio – this combination can bring up old (or current) emotional issues. Scorpio is introspective and tends to suppress feelings and keep things private. The challenge here is to allow emotions to bubble up and be acknowledged. Sharing this experience with a trusted partner, friend, family member – can help clarify what’s going on. Accepting and forgiving ourselves and others will ease the inner turmoil.

During this New Moon, on the 25th, Venus in Leo will be making a stressful angle to the Mars/Saturn combination. Relationships can feel tense. It’s a very short transit and will ease up by the 27th.

In Summary: It’s important to take good care of ourselves right now – and handle the stressful energies with awareness and compassion – for ourselves and others. We’re in times of upheaval and the way to navigate through is to stay grounded, alert and be a calming presence – creating waves of peace that will ripple out and make a difference – whether we know it or not.
